The University Of Salford 

 

The University Of Salford has just under 20,000 students and is based about 1.5 miles west of the city centre of Manchester. The university origins can be traced all the way back to 1896 when it opened as the Royal Technical Institute, Salford. Famously, the first chancellor was HRH Price Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, who remained the universities chancellor until 1991, as is still to this day involved with the university. In 1996, the University College Salford merged with the University Of Salford to form a single institution. And in October 2011, the University of Salford opened a learning and research space at MediaCity UK wish is a massive step forward for the university and shows the universities ambition.

The University of Salford is an up and coming university, according to ratings the course they run well are Engineering: Mechanical , Nursing, Architecture, Social Policy & Administration, Physics and the courses they struggle on are Biosciences, Drama, Psychology, Art & Design, Sociology.

  • There are a number of high profile visiting lecturers to provide teaching across all four faculties. Among the most famous are former Smiths guitarist, Johnny Marr, and David Threlfall, who plays Frank Gallagher in Shameless.

How To Get There

Situated just a mile and half away from Manchester’s City Centre and just 1.6 miles from MediaCityUK the university is positioned in a great location. There is a railway station (Salford Cresent Railway Station) on campus and regular bus services.

Car Parking

All University car parks are open and staffed during weekdays. The Northern, Frederick Road and Adelphi car parks are also open in the evenings. Before leaving the Irwell Place, Northern and Frederick Road sites. (Ensure you obtain a car parking token.)

Disabled Parking

Designated disabled parking spaces are available in Maxwell Building, Faraday House, Irwell Place car park, Humphrey Booth House, Adelphi House, Adelphi Building, Cockroft Building, Horlock Court, Northern car park and Frederick Road site.

Campus Map 

-  There are over 800 PCs in the libraries and open access suites across the University.

-  The University of Salford have a 103,000sq ft space at MediaCityUK on nearby Salford Quays. It has state of the art conference, meeting and creative studio space for TV, Radio and live performance all using latest the AV and communication technology.

-  The £10-million Salford Law School opened in September 2007. The purpose-built building features a Law Society-approved law library and a mock court room known as a 'moot'.

-  The Student Life department recently had a £3-million refit to provide the best possible environment for students to get advice on anything from careers to finance.

-  They have three campuses all within a 10 minute walk of each other.

-  Their £22m Health & Social Care building, based on the Frederick Road Campus, has purpose-built practice clinics, hospital ward facilities and a human performance lab. 

-  Based on the main campus, Peel Park, hosts their £10m Law School building, the student union and the leisure centre.

-  The Adelphi campus is home to their Media, Music & Performance students and the Art & Design school. By 2013 they aim to  have a £47m state-of-the-art new building for the School of Media, Music & Performance ready for use.

The Tom Husband Leisure Centre on campus has a 25-m swimming pool. In addition to this it boasts four gymnasiums, a climbing wall, squash courts and a large multi-use sports hall.

The large multi-use sports hall has six badminton courts, two basketball courts, five-a-side football pitch, netball court, handball court and in line hockey court.

The university also has astroturf pitches for football, hockey, rugby matches etc. and also grass pitches for football and rugby.
